Hotel for Birds

We've been watching live webcams of owls, hawks, bears, and lots of others since last spring. It's so much fun. We've been so inspired by watching these creatures that we decided to build our own nesting box to put in our backyard.

After searching online we found there are many types of nesting boxes you can build and decided to make a few different ones. Our first nesting box is finished. From start to finish it took us three days to complete--but this wasn't straight building time. This was with us still maintaining our normal daily activities. Here are some pictures of us hard at work.

My 13-year-old taught me how to drill holes--AWESOME

This was a great project. Everyone in the family had a little something to add whether it was drilling holes, scoring walls, measuring wood, attaching hinges, etc. We worked hard, learned a lot about birds, and now we have a really cool nesting box in the back. This is our first, but definitely not our last. We've already got the plans and supplies for the next one. My son named this one, "Hotel for Birds." Check it out below.

If you're inspired to build a nesting box, go to this website www.nwf.org/gardenforwildlife for specific information about measurements and other important things to consider when building nesting boxes for birds. You can also set up your backyard to be a certified wildlife habitat--how cool is that! We're aiming for this and will be posting when we receive it. Have fun!
