Venus Flytrap = FUN

We've been looking locally for one of these plants since last year, but they're sold seasonally and are difficult to find. Well, Spring has sprung and we finally found a Venus Flytrap for sale. We found it at Lowe's for about $8.00. Can you imagine our excitement?

First attempt at feeding the plant

Working together to feed the Venus Flytrap

As soon as we got home, the boys grabbed some bugs from the yard and attempted to feed this carnivorous plant. Finally after experiencing a few minutes of frustration, they realized that they could work together to get the bug into the mouths of these predators. One held the plant still, while the other gently placed a bug right into the center of the plant's "mouth."

SNAP! The bug hit the spot and the mouth quickly snapped shut. It was so cool! All four of us--my husband included--were excited and amazed at what had just happened. After a few minutes, all but two of them had closed and were happily munching on their buggy prey. Okay, not really munching, but working on digesting them.

Each of the traps is like a small stomach and secretes acid to digest the bug. Did you know that it can take anywhere from 5-12 days for the insect to be completely digested? Can you imagine chewing your food for 5-12 days straight? I'm glad we don't have to!
